If you’re a ’95 baby, regardless of what country you grew up in, you were entranced under the HSM fad when the movie was released, demonstrating behaviors such as a) learning the choreography to We’re All In This Together, b) begging your parents to take you to the concert tour, the ice tour, or Broadway musical, c) purchasing the karaoke video games and singing Sharpay’s parts with a sassy diva accent, and d) lining up for hours for the opening night screening of HSM3.

I’ve experienced solidarity with my ‘95 peers during college commencement and at football games when we narrowly win and rush the field, but these feelings are incomparable to the camaraderie I’ve felt when someone jokingly cues Start of Something New on Spotify at a party and the whole room bursts into song with 100% accuracy, despite not having listened to the soundtrack for 10 years. There are many reasons why HSM managed to transcend borders and take over the world, including its aggressive global marketing strategies, regrettably catchy songs, and ability to make foreign teens, such as myself, become obsessed with the vanilla fantasy of American high school life, including the lavish public school campus, distinct social cliques, and well-dressed attractive teenagers who dared defy the status quo. As a result, HSM is undeniably the zeitgeist of ‘95 babies’ formative years, as evidenced by the video clip of a whole club going nuts and bursting out singing when the DJ put on an EDM remix of Breaking Free.
